Since its discovery, the comet has brightened substantially and is now visible in the northern constellation of Corona Borealis in predawn skies, although it is still too dim to be seen without a telescope. The fine telescopic image from December 19th shows the comet’s brighter greenish coma, short broad dust tail, and long faint ion tail stretching across a 2.5-degree wide field-of-view. As the comet continues its voyage through the inner Solar System, it will reach perihelion, its closest point to the Sun, on January 12th, and perigee, its closest point to Earth, on February 1st. The brightness of comets is notoriously unpredictable, but by then C/2022 E3 (ZTF) could potentially become visible to the naked eye in dark night skies.
